The sides are being planed down to a thickness of 0.080'' before bent to shape. It is a bit challenging to get uniform thickness with the hand planer, but slow and carefull work eventually gets there.

I actually over-planed at some points; some which go down all the way to 0.067''. Its hard to stop once you get moving with this junky-plane.

I made this bending pipe using a piece of large diameter pipe, some welding, and a charcoal starter from home-depot. I squashed the pipe a little in a vise to get radiis for different contours on the sides. The whole thing cost me under $20, and it works great!

As you can see, the wood was soaked in water for about 15 minutes before it was exposed to the pipe. This deters charring, and also improves elasticity in the wood.

Two sides are near complete. The challenge is getting them to be a symmetrical to each other. I still need to make some minor adjustments on these before I assemble them to the soundboard.
